Fire Safety - Reducing the Risks  Printer Friendly

Temperatures are on the rise. You don’t have to be surrounded by bushland to be at risk of starting a dangerous fire this season. Many of us have hazards that could put our family, neighbours and friends at risk of fire….right in our own backyards! This year the State Government has invested an additional $5 million a year getting our parks fire ready by reducing fuel loads, slashing grass and carrying out planned burns.

All community members can help reduce risk this fire season:

Tidy Up High Risk Spots
During a heatwave, piles of newspaper, tyres, petrol and wood become dangerous fuel for a fire
Before the fire season starts make sure you clean up your property to safely store or remove anything that burns easily
Contact Council about hard rubbish collection
For hazardous waste disposal contact Sustainability Victoria on 1300 363 744

Properly Dispose of Cigarette Butts
Lit cigarette butts pose one of the biggest threats to our community
Properly put out and dispose of cigarettes and never throw butts out of car windows
If you see someone incorrectly disposing of cigarette butts, report them by calling 1300-NOBUTTS

Keep a Look Out
To do the best job we can to help get the west ready for the fire season we need your help!

If you see any fire hazards that pose a potential threat contact Council.

Some Properties are More Vulnerable
If your house backs on to a park or train line you can face greater risk of fire danger. To help reduce these risks you will need to clear rubbish and flammables around your property and make sure any mowed grass near your fence is clear of objects.

Residents near parks and train lines are also encouraged to locate their nearest fire hydrants. If you need help accessing your nearest fire hydrant contact City West Water on 1392837.

Help fire proof the Western region and remove hazards from your property now!
