Cycling in Maribyrnong – Facts, Figures, Facilities, Council Projects

Council plans, installs and maintains bike paths, bike lanes, bike route signs and end of trip facilities such a bike parking hoops.

Facilities now include

• 28km on road bike lanes
• 20km off road paths, including 8km of shared walking and cycling path beside the Maribyrnong River
• 280 bike parking hoops

Bike Skills Training

Refresh Bike Skills

Boost your confidence to get around by bike. Our bike skills training will help you learn about maintaining your bike and/or how to ride safely on streets and bike paths. You need to be able to ride a bike even if it is a while since you have done so. In a traffic free area you will learn about bike control, stopping, turning and defensive riding techniques.

Training is run by the professionals at Bikes At Work - cost $10 full and $5 concession.

Bike Law

The Victorian Law Foundation has released a bike rider's guide to road rules in Victoria. Know you road rules and ride safe!

Yarraville Parkiteer

The west side of Yarraville Railway Station now has secure bike parking. A collaboration of Council and PTV, the Parkiteer provides an alternative to needing to drive to the railway station.

Increase in Cycling - 2015 Bike Counts Map

Annual counts of riders have been conducted across Maribyrnong since March 2007. There has been a steady increase in commuter numbers along key bike routes. Please see map (attachment below) showing rider numbers from the 7 to 9am counts on 3 March 2015.

Public Bike Pumps and Repair Stands

Council now has a public bike pump and a bike repair stand on the south east corner of Moreland and Napier Streets in Footscray as well as on the Maribyrnong River Trail in Pipemakers Park . Inflate your tyres or fix your bike on your way past!

Ride to Work Day Workplace Breakfasts

Council is supporting Maribyrnong workplaces to hold Ride to Work Day breakfasts at their workplace on Wednesday 12 October 2016. We can provide materials to help promote the event along with fruit boxes and prizes to encourage new riders to give it a go.

Consider riding your bike to work any day. In the inner city you can travel as fast on a bike as by car and have fun while you are at it!

Cycle Saloon - Community Bicycle Workshop of Melbourne's West

Council supports the work of the Cycle Saloon - a community bicycle workshop open every Sunday from 11am – 5pm in Pipemaker’s Park on the Maribyrnong River.

Footscray Bike Shed, Mills Close, Footscray

Council together with Footscray Rotary Club has initiated a Community Bike Shed project that aims to give donated bikes a good service before handing them on to refugees in the community who are often without transport. See link to poster below for more information.

This initiative will do more than just provide wheels to the needy, it will bring together organisations, community groups and individuals who will work to raise awareness about sustainable transport, bike maintenance and road safety and provide refugees with a place to feel connected in the community, share knowledge and make friends.

The Community Bike Shed is open every Wednesday 4- 5pm for drop offs and Saturdays 11am-3pm for bike servicing. Volunteers are being asked to donate bike parts, a bike or just time.
