What Are Heritage Places?

Heritage places are places of cultural interest that provide a link with the past for visual, architectural, historic, scientific, social, or spiritual reasons.

Heritage in the City of Maribyrnong

The City of Maribyrnong has many heritage places including, buildings, specific areas, industrial and archaeological sites, parks, trees and objects. These heritage sites show different phases of the City’s development, from Aboriginal times to early European settlement and the later influence of the manufacturing and defence industries. Maribyrnong is one of a kind in its combination of residential, industrial and natural heritage sites.

Heritage Overlay

Heritage places are protected by planning controls known as the Heritage Overlay. The Overlay includes a list (known as the schedule to the Heritage Overlay) of significant places within the municipality. The aim of the Heritage Overlay is to keep and improve places of heritage value, and to ensure they are protected.
