MetroAccess Program

The MetroAccess initiative aims to increase the participation of people with disability in their local communities. It is a partnership between the Department of Health and Human Services and local government across Victoria.

The MetroAccess program is incorporated into Disability Policy and Action Plan 2015-2018 which sets out Council's policy vision and priority actions to create a more inclusive and accessible community for people with disability, their families and carers.

MetroAccess Initiatives

1. Recharge Scheme provides points located in public spaces to assist wheelchair and scooter users if their mobility aid runs out of charge. The area has a power point and is large enough for a wheelchair to manoeuvre and park. Some locations also have a charger provided on site to assist with the recharge process.
2. Talking Taxis makes taxi journeys easier for passengers with a communication barrier or a disability.
3. Access Facts Sheets provide user friendly access information about the built environment - Improving access in your home; Access aids & equipment for home; Hiring accessible equipment for events; Business and building lessees - responsibilities under the Disability Standards; Business and building owners - responsibilities under the Disability Standards.
4. Communication Boards aim to improve access to Council services for people with complex communication needs. Maribyrnong City Council is developing boards for all customer service points in partnership with SCOPE.

MetroAccess Calendar of Events

The MetroAccess Program organises and participates in events for people with disabilities during the year including International Day of People with Disability and the Maribyrnong Inclusive Recognition Awards.

Some important dates to look out for include:
World Mental Health Day - 10 October
Carer's Week - 9 to 15 October
Children's Week - 22 to 30 October
International Day of People with Disability - 3 December
