StreetWORKS project completed by artist Ross Thomasson. Located under the Somerville Road Bridge in Yarraville.

StreetWORKS is a project that creates innovative visual street art to enliven spaces and discourage graffiti and tagging. Selected artists create art works that is inspired by or relevant to our local community and our City.

Maribyrnong City Council has embarked on an innovative graffiti prevention program – StreetWORKS! initiated in 2014 – involving partnerships with property owners, businesses and government utilities to place commissioned artwork on surfaces subject to recurrent illegal tagging and graffiti.

The project provides opportunities for artists to develop new ways to express and enhance their artistic practice by activating sites in the Maribyrnong neighbourhood (ie. railway abutments, bridges, property walls). The program creates mutual respect in the community by engaging artists with property owners and businesses, in which street art projects can be appreciated by the wider community in a more positive light.

The outcomes of the project are:

  • to create innovative visual art in the urban environment
  • animate identified sites
  • discourage graffiti and tagging
  • engage artists more closely with the community
  • improve livability and safety in the City of Maribyrnong.
