Where commercial properties choose to engage a private waste collection service, private contractors must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety guidelines for waste and recycling collectors.

What can I put into my commercial waste bins?

To receive a commercial waste service, you must use the bins correctly and separate your waste and recycling into the appropriate bins.

Remember not to overfill your bins. The maximum weight for bins is 70kg, bins which exceed this weight, or which are overflowing will not be collected.

To find out what items can be recycled and what should be placed in your general waste bin, download the free Maribyrnong Bins and Recycling App.

How can I reduce waste at my business?

There are many ways that you can take action to reduce waste and save resources at your place of business. Visit the War on Waste Toolkit for Business for free advice and signage for your workplace to help sort and manage waste.

Order a commercial waste bin

Only the ratepayer (landlord or owner) is authorised to order additional bins, which will be charged on annual rates. If you are a new business and would like to request your first waste and recycling bin entitlement, or additional bins, please contact the Waste Management Team.

Penalties for contaminated bins

Council waste collection services are subject to Local Laws 49 (1-4) and are provided under the following conditions:

  • Bins must not be contaminated with inappropriate materials or any waste that is not the type of waste the bin was provided for.
  • No waste shall be placed in the bins which can damage the bin or collection vehicle.
  • Bins shall be maintained in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • All waste should be contained within the bin, no material should be left outside a bin.
  • Bins must be brought back in to the property within 24 hours of collection and should not go out more than 24 hours prior to collection.

Where the property owner fails to comply with these laws, bins will not be collected, and the owner may be subject to on the spot penalties of up to $1000.

When is my commercial bin emptied?
