Conversation Piece: a live knitting circle

To celebrate International Women's Day, join us for Conversation Piece: a live knitting circle with artist Kate Just and curator and writer Sophia Cai.

Come along to this special event and be part of a conversation about feminism and craft as a force for social change, while contributing a crafted square to Kate’s new community-engaged artwork entitled Conversation Piece.

Conversation Piece involves the creation of a giant, communally knitted and crocheted yellow length of fabric. This artwork will be created in public craft circles around Australia before it is exhibited in the Tamworth Textile Triennial in 2023. As part of the triennial, the work will then tour galleries across Australia for three years, where it will continue to grow in size and act as a live, ongoing material documentation of the important process of collective making, gathering, talking, and listening.

People of all genders, ages and craft abilities welcome, with all yarn provided. Some crochet hooks and knitting needles provided, however attendees are welcome to bring needles. Parents and carers are encouraged to bring children to the event, as we’ll have a craft table for children. A light dinner will be provided.

ABOUT KATE JUST:

Kate Just is an award-winning American born Australian artist and Senior Lecturer in Art at the Victorian College of the Arts, based on Dja Dja Wurrung Country, Castlemaine. Just is best known for her inventive and political use of knitting in artworks which tackle feminist themes. In addition to her solo practice, Just often works socially and collaboratively within communities to create large scale, public art projects that tackle issues including sexual harassment and violence against women.

ABOUT SOPHIA CAI:

Sophia Cai 蔡晨昕 is a curator, lecturer and arts writer based in Narrm/Melbourne, Australia. Sophia is particularly interested in Asian art histories, the intersections between contemporary art and craft, and feminist curatorial methodologies and community-building as forms of political resistance. For the last two years, Sophia has been researching the connection between fandom and curating as dual practices rooted in care.
