Previous Community Leadership programs
‘Connecting Maribyrnong’ 2019
In 2019 twenty dedicated and committed community members graduated from the ‘Connecting Maribyrnong’ 12 week program. The graduating leaders came from across the municipality represent a diversity of backgrounds, ages, cultures and interests and they all share a passion for their community.
‘Connecting Maribyrnong’ has a focus on building connections and enabling participation. The program is designed to build participants’ knowledge, skills, networks, and confidence, as well encouraging them to be active in their communities and contribute to positive change towards building a vibrant and resilient city.
Growing our community
Held in 2017, this 12-week accredited leadership program had an environment and sustainability theme. The aim of the program was to support local environment groups, including “Friends of” groups and community gardens, to increase their capacity to better respond to environmental issues and challenges.
Following the program a Pitch for Funds process offered the graduates seed funding to deliver their own initiatives.
The program was funded by the Myer Foundation.
Braybrook on Board
The Braybrook on Board leadership program offered a place-based approach encouraging local residents to become actively involved in community life and decision-making processes.
Participants developed and delivered community projects such as community welcoming events, health and fitness programs, employment and enterprise initiatives, programs for families and children, and projects to improve neighbourhood amenity and champion gender equity.
Overall:
- 28 community members graduated from Braybrook on Board, with six participants undertaking further education at university, TAFE or VET
- 21 community projects involving 82 volunteers have been delivered, reaching more than 1,500 community members.
The impact of the program on the participants and the community has been profound. Graduates say the experience has enabled and supported their leadership aspirations and given them the confidence, skills, networks and partnerships to affect positive change in their community.
