In 2024, Maribyrnong City Council is competing with councils across metropolitan Melbourne to participate in the City Nature Challenge. Help Maribyrnong to compete with other councils by taking pictures of wild plants and animals between Friday 26 April to Monday 29 April 2024 using iNaturalist.

What is the City Nature Challenge?

The City Nature Challenge is an annual global event that celebrates local wildlife and flora through citizen science. The event is coordinated by the California Academy of Sciences and the Los Angeles County Natural History Museum and was first run in 2016.

During the 4-day observation period from Friday 26 April to Monday 29 April 2024, you are invited to find, photograph and document the native plants and animals that live and grow in our neighbourhood on the iNaturalist app.

To get involved, simply:

  • Download the free iNaturalist app
  • Get out into parks, streets and backyards over the four days of the Challenge. Take photos or record sounds of wildlife, plants, insects and fungi anywhere in Maribyrnong.
  • Share your observations via the iNaturalist app.

Visit Maribyrnong's iNaturalist page to keep up to date with observations recorded.

Help us compete with cities from around the world by taking photos or making sound recordings of wild plants and animals betweenFriday 26 April to Monday 29 April 2024 using iNaturalist. Let's show the world the incredible biodiversity of Maribyrnong!
