Traders are invited to nominate for the Business Improvement District (BID) grant program, which funds projects to strengthen the city’s business districts and promote destination marketing, with applications closing on Friday 6 July.

Grants from $1,000 to $50,000 are available to trader associations and groups of five or more businesses within the City of Maribyrnong for projects that promote the area as a destination to visit, increase trade, or generally enhance the viability of the business precinct.

Since the grant program was introduced in 2016, ten projects have been funded including night markets, promotional videos and a scholarship program.

The innovative scholarship program run by She Will Shine enabled 10 female entrepreneurs located in the City of Maribyrnong to meet regularly for business workshops and training sessions.

Danielle Price, Founder of She Will Shine, said the project had a positive impact on the local community.

“It’s seen local businesses come together to work collaboratively and to learn side by side. It has forged strong friendships, all of which have strengthened each business involved,” Danielle said.

Stuart Lucca-Pope, President of the Footscray Traders Association, said the grants enabled them to produce a promotional video showcasing Footscray designed to be shared on social media.

“We wanted locals to really recognise their community and feel honoured by its representation. That way they would feel proud to share it with friends through their social media networks, in turn inspiring outsiders to visit,” Stuart said.

Within the first 12 hours, the video had been viewed over 3,000 times and shared over 80 times.

“If anyone has a good idea about how to strengthen any business community in the City of Maribyrnong, applying for this grant is how you can get it done,” Stuart said.

This year’s Business Improvement District Grant round is now open. Applications close at 5pm on Friday 6 July.
