Transport is an essential part of our daily lives and creating a strategy to ensure Maribyrnong’s vast network of roads, rail, and paths are well connected is a priority.

With a growing population – forecast to increase by more than 60,000 by 2051 – and other challenges such as ongoing road network congestion, major construction projects and more facilities needed for trains, trams and bicycles, Council is creating a new Integrated Transport Strategy to address our community’s needs in the future.

The Strategy will help guide Council’s transport planning and our sustainability and advocacy priorities. It will aim to facilitate safe, efficient, and sustainable movement around our municipality, manage traffic congestion, inform decisions on road space allocation, advocate for improved public transport, and support alternative means of transport.

“In Maribyrnong, we’re faced with complex – and at times competing – transport needs. Our future transport choices can directly impact the liveability of our municipality and contribute to our efforts in addressing climate change. By looking at transport as a connected network – rather than separate or competing travel modes – we hope to shape transport in Maribyrnong into a connected, sustainable, and coordinated system,” Mayor, Cr Cuc Lam said.

Council has prepared a discussion paper capturing current challenges and opportunities, along with six key directions to help inform an initial conversation with our community. These six strategic directions are: Maximise the Benefits of Active Transport; Adopt a Movement & Place Approach; Improve Mode Choice and Accessibility; Focus on Sustainable Development; Become a Transport Innovation and Change Leader and; Move Toward a Safe System.

As part of the initial conversation, feedback is also sought on a north/south cycling corridor to connect Footscray to Maribyrnong, in line with Council’s commitment at the 18 October 2023 Council meeting to engage with residents before progressing further. We want to understand whether you think a North/South Cycling Corridor is needed and, if so, where and what do you think are the key elements to consider in delivering it?

You can learn more, provide feedback on the six strategic directions and share your thoughts on a north/south cycling corridor online at yourcityyourvoice.com.au/integrated-transport

You can also chat with us in person at a number of in-person events, beginning Saturday 28 July from 11am-1pm at our National Tree Planting Day at Burndap Park.

Feedback closes midnight Sunday 15 September 2024.
