Major Road Works Program to Improve Maribyrnong Road Network
Published on 09 June 2023
As part of Council’s commitment to maintain the local road network, five high traffic roads across the municipality are about to receive a ‘face lift.’
Over the coming months, contractors will be undertaking major patching and resurfacing works to improve the condition of Somerville Road, Rosamond Road, Mitchell Street and Churchill Avenue, with a full reconstruction of Summerhill Road to follow later in the year.
These distributor roads carry high volumes of traffic into, through and out of the municipality and the road works are essential to address deterioration and restore the condition of these main traffic routes.
Works are scheduled to begin on Somerville Road the week commencing Monday 19 June, followed by Mitchell Street and Churchill Avenue, then Rosamond Road with Summerhill Road currently scheduled for a start in late September.
Contractors engaged by Council will spend around four weeks in each location, with works generally taking place at night, between the hours of 7pm and 6am six days a week (Sunday night through Friday morning) to minimise the impact on traffic flows during the daylight hours.
Detours and traffic management will be in place to support road users to navigate around the works. Residents will be supported to maintain access to properties.
There will be some noise during these works, which involves removing the existing road surface and replacing it with a new layer of hot mix asphalt, but our contractors will do their best to minimise impacts to the community.
The upgrades to all five distributor roads is anticipated to be completed by November 2023.
These upgrade works are part of a multi-million dollar Distributor Road Upgrade Project that responds to community feedback including the most recent Annual Community Survey where road maintenance was one of the top three issues highlighted for Council to immediately address.

Message from the Mayor, Councillor Sarah Carter
Our community has told us of their concerns around the maintenance of local roads. We’ve heard you. These works will improve and restore the condition of the existing road pavement across these five major roads in our City.
Critically we will be extending the life of these roads to support improved ride quality, and ensure these roads remain as safe as possible to drive on. Along with renewing the surface, the removal of any rubber or oil build up also helps prevent accidents on these high traffic routes.
While I know these works will be welcomed, I appreciate the disruptions they will cause, and I thank residents and visitors for their patience as we improve and restore the condition of our roads.
