Maribyrnong River fun in Footscray

Published on 25 February 2020

Enjoy the ambience of the Maribyrnong River in a new and exciting way by taking part in the ‘Many Hands Project’, an exciting new public art and lawn games activation behind Footscray Community Arts Centre from February to April 2020.

The launch event on 29 February will have a licensed container bar and FREE lawn games like giant jenga, quoits and lawn bowls to enjoy. Visitors to the wharf can also try some cold (Blacksmith) forging. They will be given a coin to press with a positive symbol or icon which can be taken home or hung along the railings of Henderson House Landing forming a temporary art installation.

The launch coincides with the inaugural Maribyrnong River Inflatable Regatta on 29 February. This regatta starts at Footscray Rowing Club, with 2,000 participants paddling down the Maribyrnong finishing in Footscray at Grimes Reserve.

The activation is a result of an expression of interest that called for creative ideas to utilise and activate Henderson House Landing. River Edge Creative Alliance (RECA), a collaboration between the Waterside Metal Art Studio, BiGfiSh and Footscray Community Arts Centre were the successful applicants and will be rolling out the Many Hands Project.

Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in the activation throughout February and March, and two additional events will be held on March 14 and March 28, 3-8pm.

Henderson House Landing is located along the Maribyrnong River Trail at the end of Maribyrnong Street, Footscray.

Message from the Mayor, Cr Sarah Carter
We’re thrilled to launch the ‘Many Hands Project’ at Henderson House Landing, an exciting initiative led by Council as a way to create a new and exciting space for our entire community to enjoy. The project complements Maribyrnong’s inaugural Inflatable Regatta, a wonderful activity to celebrate all that our river has to offer and an event that we are proud to support.
