A word from the Mayor, Cr Martin Zakharov:
We commend young people for taking leadership on climate change. Maribyrnong City Council supports the aims of School Strike 4 Climate in line with its climate emergency plan and encourages the community to support their efforts.
Our response to climate change comes at a time when the global community is demanding action from leaders, such as the School Strike 4 Climate on 20 September, which promotes the need for no new coal, oil and gas projects; 100% renewable energy generation and fund a just transition and job creation for all fossil-fuel industry workers.
Maribyrnong City Council stepped up its position on global warming at the Ordinary Council Meeting 19 February, acknowledging that we are in a state of ‘climate emergency’ that requires urgent action by all levels of government.
We are now working with the community to recruit an advisory committee to help guide us in drafting our Climate Emergency Plan, community members can now visit our online engagement platform Your City Your Voice to register their interest to be part of the advisory group.
The Climate Emergency Plan is expected to see Council taking a key role in relation to education, reduction of emissions and working together with the community to mitigate the severity of climate change and to adapt to its current and future impacts.
