Nepal’s first and only contemporary circus comes to Footscray

Circus Kathmandu will make their way from Nepal to Footscray this month for a residency with Women’s Circus.
Learning the Ropes: Social Circus from Kathmandu to Melbourne will celebrate the ongoing two year partnership between the renowned Women’s Circus and the internationally celebrated Nepalese organisation with two public events that will share stories of their collaboration.
To welcome Circus Kathmandu to Melbourne, Women’s Circus will host the Australian premiere of the critically acclaimed documentary Even When I Fall at Footscray Community Arts Centre on Sunday 13 May. The documentary traces the journey of two women as they confront the families that sold them, and begin to build a future as circus artists and company members of Circus Kathmandu.
During their visit to Melbourne, three Circus Kathmandu artists will also join the Women’s Circus for a two-week residency where they will explore social circus community workshop delivery and collaborative creative development.
Women’s Circus Executive Director Devon Taylor said Learning the Ropes provides both companies with the opportunity to share their skills and gain new artistic direction.
“Through this program we hope to bring attention to the work that both Women’s Circus and Circus Kathmandu undertake to address and shift issues around gender equality and gendered violence,” Taylor said.
“Both Circus Kathmandu artists visiting Melbourne are survivors of human trafficking and are now using their amazing circus skills to shed light on the issues around human trafficking and the effects on women,” Taylor continued.
The residency will culminate in a fun-filled community event with circus workshops, pop-up performances, food, craft, music and more. Taking place on Saturday 26 May at the home of Women’s Circus – The Drill Hall – the free event is supported by Council’s Community Grant program.
Women’s Circus received funding towards the Learning the Ropes Community Day as part of Council’s 2017/18 Community Grant round.
