New Immersive Arts Festival for City of Maribyrnong
Published on 07 June 2017
This August, Maribyrnong will host a new immersive arts festival which will bolster the City’s growing reputation as a premier arts destination and presenter of world-class festivals.
The inaugural Due West: Immersive Arts Festival will see a program of events taking place across the City over a three-week period, showcasing works from local artists, organisations and venues across multi-disciplinary art forms.
The Victorian Government has pledged its support for the Council-led initiative, today announcing $85,000 in funding through Creative Victoria to match City of Maribyrnong’s investment.
Running from 10 – 27 August, Due West: Immersive Arts Festival will ask participants to ‘immerse themselves in the inner west’ through performance, workshops, visual arts, music and dance.
The festival will transform the City through sensory art sending locals and visitors on a journey of discovery.
The 2017 festival will serve as a platform from which to develop and grow the program in coming years.
“The City of Maribyrnong is home to a rich, diverse and thriving arts community. Through our ‘Festival City’ program we attract and nurture activities which support and foster the arts, contributing to the cultural and civic richness of our City,” said City of Maribyrnong Mayor Catherine Cumming.
“Through the introduction of Due West to our Festival City program, we can continue to support the arts community, cultivate local and provide opportunities for our wider community to participate in and enjoy.”
“We thank the Victorian Government for its support for this exciting arts festival, which we hope will grow to become a permanent fixture on our annual Festival City calendar.”
Local creative agency The Background has been engaged to deliver the inaugural festival in conjunction with Council, following a competitive EOI process.
Artists, organisations and groups who are interested in participating in the festival are encouraged to complete an ‘Expression of Interest’ by 16 June 2017.
The full festival program will be announced in July.
