Footscray is home to a new StreetWORKS mural by local artist, Andy Robertson. Named Right Now in Footscray the eye-catching work of art utilises gentle humour to depict keenly observed moments, celebrating everyday personal discoveries and experiences around the local area.

Activating the pedestrian pathway alongside the Footscray Library, the multi-panel mural was completed in the nick of time before lockdown restrictions were reintroduced in early August.

The black graphic illustrations on pastel panel backgrounds are accompanied by clever, quirky captions depicting six moments envisioned to be occurring simultaneously in Footscray. An adventurous seal, an abandoned couch, a construction site, plastic flowers and she-oaks are just some of scenarios captured that are immediately familiar and relatable.

Footscray artist, Andy Robertson, developed the design for the mural during a month-long residency at ArtsBox in May 2021. Council’s ArtsBox is an artist-in-residence program located in a bespoke shipping container beside Footscray Library and immediately in front of the mural wall, allowing Andy to have immediate access to the site, and the community who inspired his design.

As part of the ArtsBox program, Andy was mentored by renowned street artist, Chuck Mayfied, who provided advice and practical guidance. Describing the mentorship aspect of the project, Andy said it was a big learning curve, but the mural came together really well.

“I’m even happier with it (the mural) than I thought I’d be,” said Andy.

“My creative practice is focused on capturing quirky and interesting behaviours through drawing. To focus my attention on my own neighbourhood creatively and be able to share it on a much larger scale was particularly enjoyable,” Andy continued.

The project is part of Maribyrnong City Council’s StreetWORKS program delivered in partnership with Footscray Library and Footscray Baptist Church. The initiative supports and promotes the arts while contributing to the visual amenity of our neighbourhoods and has the added benefit of reducing graffiti and tagging.

“This new mural highlights our community spirit and the joy of everyday discoveries that can happen right here in Footscray. I encourage everyone who is able to check out the mural on their daily walks,” Cr Michael Clarke, Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong said.
