West Footscray resident and emerging artist Renee Karacsay will hold her first solo exhibition later this month at Phoenix Gallery.

From the Hand is a compilation of abstract expressionist works that focuses on the impulsive gestures of the hand, exploring techniques of the pallet knife to create works with an emphasis on painterly impulse and kaleidoscopic colour themes.

The exhibition expands the constraints of perfectionism and asks the viewer to reflect upon the relationship between society and the ‘ideal’, in turn inviting them to revel in the fancifulness of imagination.

Renee is looking forward to presenting From the Hand, an exhibition that she believes will break down barriers of self doubt.

“I am really excited to share my collection of art as it expresses a momentary page in my life that is purely spontaneous and from the now.” Renee said.

The collection has taken form over two months, in which Renee worked full time to create something new and fresh.

The artist’s work is inspired by the world around her, from interesting lighting and shadows on the street to fingerprints and smudges on a train window.

But having grown up in country Victoria, Renee said her greatest source of inspiration comes from being in her hometown, spending time in the bush and exploring the coast line of the Great Ocean Road.

“The fresh air and quietness lets my mind listen to all the eager ideas in my head that are waiting to be manifested onto paper,” Renee continued.

She admits that her work has changed a lot since she moved to West Footscray earlier this year.

“The biggest impact on my work has been the opportunity to go to art shows and see established and emerging artists. The art culture in Footscray is pretty epic. There is so much support for local artists, which I think is such a valuable asset,” Renee said.

Renee’s collection of works will be on display at Phoenix Gallery, located at Phoenix Youth Hub, from 21 July to 20 August. Entry is free.
