The City of Maribyrnong has a distinctive and interesting physical and social landscape shaped by its working class roots and immigration history.

Maribyrnong is the hub of Melbourne’s western region and the western gateway to the Melbourne CBD and Docklands precinct. Maribyrnong’s strategic importance is recognised by the Victorian Government in Melbourne 2030, where Footscray is identified as a central activity district.

Maribyrnong City Council is a full and active partner in Western Melbourne Tourism (WMT) with other councils in the region; Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham. WMT is an incorporated association with a combined board of council and industry representatives. WMT is responsible for implementing the Western Melbourne Region Tourism Strategy by driving regional tourism initiatives and lobbying State and Federal Governments and their agencies.
