Hard rubbish collections
Council collects over 1,200 tonnes of hard rubbish every year. In order to collect hard rubbish safely from all households across the city, we have some important rules about what we will and won't collect.
Please be aware that hard rubbish collections are intended for items that are at the end of their lives and can no longer be re-used. Not all items placed in hard rubbish can be re-used or recycled. If you have items that can still be used by others please consider alternatives such as repair or donation.
Council offers one free hard rubbish collection per eligible household each calendar year. (If you are in a multi-unit dwelling special rules apply, see below.) All you have to do is book a collection and make sure that you follow the collection rules.
Leave your hard rubbish items on your property
Your hard rubbish must be placed on your property and must not be placed in public areas such as footpaths or nature strips.
In order to collect the items, our collectors must be able to reach your hard rubbish safely. Items must be stacked neatly either in your front yard or driveway and as close as possible to the front boundary of the property.
*Please note: when stacking your hard waste, please ensure that your hard waste and green waste are clearly separated from other items not intended to be removed. Council and its service providers will not be held liable if you do not separate wanted items and they are accidentally collected.
If you are unable to meet the above placement requirements for your hard rubbish items, you can request an exemption by phoning us on 9688 0200 or send us an email to email@example.com and we will assess your individual situation.
Only place allowable items in your hard rubbish
Only certain things can be put out for a hard rubbish collection. If you do not follow the collection rules, your items will not be collected and we will leave you a knock back notice in your letterbox informing you why.
To help you identify what items we will collect and what items we won't collect, you can download a copy of the hard rubbish brochure at the bottom of this page, or visit our hard rubbish gallery.
Observe the limits
To ensure that everyone has an opportunity to have their hard rubbish collected, there are strict limits on the amount of waste that you can put out.
Each booked collection can include:
- 2 cubic metres of hard and metal waste (2 metres long x 1 metre wide x 1 metre high).
- 4 cubic metres of green waste items (4 metres long x 1 metre wide x 1 metre high).
- 2 mattresses or 2 bed bases or 1 mattress and 1 base.
If needed, additional hard rubbish collections can be arranged for a fee of $81.80. If you would like to book an additional hard rubbish collection please contact Council on 9688 0200.
Hard rubbish collections from multi-dwelling complexes
If you live in a multi-unit dwelling complex, your hard rubbish collections are arranged on your behalf by the owners corporation or the building manager. Residents of multi-dwelling complexes should not contact Council to arrange individual hard rubbish collections.
If you live in a multi-unit complex, please contact your responsible complex caretaker or owners corporation to advise if your complex is eligible to receive Council’s hard waste collection service. They will also be able to advise if there is a registered collection point inside the property (as hard waste is not permitted to be placed on the nature strip) and can organise the collection on your behalf or inform you of the existing collection process. Alternatively, if your complex is not eligible for Council's hard waste collection (reasons being there is no internal space or the developer has not met Council’s eligibility requirements), your owners corporation can best assist you with organising a private hard waste collection.
Any discrepancies regarding multi-unit sites eligibility for hard waste collections will be reviewed by Council and a decision made at its discretion. Council can also review existing multi-unit sites that currently have a hard waste collection in place and revoke entitlement. Sites must have a suitable or adequate internal space or access allocated for collection and the management of hard waste. Spaces must be managed in a compliant, safe, clean and practicable manner.
Cancellations or additional items
If you need to cancel or alter your booking, you must do so by 2pm on the Friday prior to your scheduled collection. Failure to do this will result in your free collection being forfeited.
Please notify Council of large items to be collected, such as household white goods. Our collectors will not take any additional items that we have not been made aware of in your request for a hard rubbish collection.
