Apply for an accessible parking permit

From 1 May 2021, changes have been introduced to the Disability Parking Permit Scheme in Victoria to better align with the Australian Disability Parking Permit Scheme.  The new online scheme is known as the Accessible Parking Permit (APP) Scheme and introduces a number of improvements including:

  • Ensuring eligibility criteria is consistent across the state of Victoria
  • Allowing occupational therapists to complete assessments, in addition to General Practitioners,
  • Introducing a permanent disability classification, so many applicants will no longer be required to undergo a periodic re-assessment,
  • Increasing the permit validity length from three years to five years for individual,applicants
  • Providing temporary permits for periods of 6, 12 or 24 months,
  • Implementing a new single permit design to be used across Victoria.

Types of APP Scheme Permits

Under the new APP Scheme, three types of parking permits can be issued:

  1. Australian Disability Parking Permit (formerly the Category 1 Blue disabled permit)
  2. Double Time Permit (formerly the Category 2 Green Permit)
  3. Australian Disability Parking Organisation Permit (formerly Blue organisation permit).

All existing Maribyrnong City Council permits will remain valid until they expire.

Applications for Individuals

The application process for an individual permit under the APP Scheme will now require the following:

  1. Submit your application online at www.accessibleparking.vic.gov.au
  2. Once the application is completed you will receive an application reference number via SMS.
  3. Take your reference number to your general practitioner or occupational therapist.
  4. Using your application reference number, your general practitioner or occupational therapist will complete an online assessment and submit your application.
  5. Your application will be reviewed and if it is successful you’ll receive your permit in the mail.

Applications take approximately 10 to 15 working days from the time your general practitioner or occupational therapist submits your application to when you receive it in the mail.

Applications for Organisations

The application process for an organisation permit under the APP Scheme will now require the following:

  1. Submit your application online at www.accessibleparking.vic.gov.au
  2. You’ll receive an application reference number via SMS.
  3. Maribyrnong City Council will confirm the organisations eligibility.
  4. If your application is successful you can collect the permit from Council offices at 61 Napier Street, Footscray between the hours of 8.30am and 5pm Monday to Friday excepting public holidays.

Please note that when attending our offices to collect a permit for an organisation you must bring with you proof of the business registration and vehicle registration details that must be in the name of the business.  Permits cannot be issued under the APP Scheme without proof of the above items.
