Footscray Wharf and Promenade

Maribyrnong River Edge Masterplan

In 2014, the River Edge Masterplan was adopted by Council.  The masterplan presents a vision for this section of the river which provides a series of diverse landscapes from an active urban waterfront to a natural river edge.  The main feature of the masterplan is a new wharf and promenade between Hopkins Street and Footscray Road, known as the Footscray Wharf Project.

Footscray Wharf and Promenade

The Footscray Wharf and Promenade project (part of the Maribyrnong River Edge Masterplan) aims to revitalise the river edge between Hopkins Street and Shepherds Bridge and better connect the community to the Maribyrnong River.

Council endorsed the schematic plan for this major public realm project in 2017.

Since then the Victorian Government have committed to contribute $6 million to the project through the West Gate Tunnel project.  Council has matched the funding to advance construction of Stage 1 of the project.

The main component of the Stage 1 works will include:

  • 230m long, 6m wide timber wharf/boardwalk
  • 30m long fixed lower landing and 3m long floating pontoon with mooring capabilities for small to medium vessels
  • 4m wide shared pathway/promenade
  • paved nodes for gathering and seating spaces including sheltered picnic and barbecue facilities
  • raised planters with advanced tree/palm planting and integrated seating
  • the retention of the historical spur line (rail line)
  • functional and feature lighting
  • extensive landscape works and tree planting
  • site furniture and other amenities (such as bins, drinking fountains and bike racks)
  • associated underground services - water/power
  • rock revetment work to protect the river embankment by Melbourne Water.

Next Steps

We'll soon be starting improvement works along the Maribyrnong River edge between Hopkins Street and Shepherd's Bridge, Footscray.

Fencing around the work site is planned to begin 16 November 2020, with demolition works to commence soon after.  Construction will continue for 18 months until mid-2022.

The construction area will be fenced and detours will be in place for pedestrians and cyclists along the river's edge between Hopkins Street and Shepherds Bridge, while works are underway.  This will allow pedestrians and cyclists to continue their journey along the Maribyrnong River, with minimal exposure to dust and noise resulting from construction.

This project has been a long time coming and we want to thank you in advance and patience as we complete this iconic transformation of the river's edge.
