This Empty Chair exhibition

This Empty Chair was an exhibition staged across multiple venues in 2016. It is a physical reminder of the plight of writers currently suffering unjust imprisonment as a result of attempts to silence their critical voices. Writers from across the globe who have been denied their basic human right to freedom of expression. The exhibition is in recognition of the 35th anniversary of the Day of the Imprisoned Writer, an International event observed annually on 15 November.

“As a human being you have the right to express yourself. You have the right to journey wherever your mind wanders and to express the thoughts you come up with along the way. You have the right to believe and to atone, the same way you have the right to love and hate.”
Raif Badawi - Saudi writer and political activist. Currently serving 10 years in prison and sentenced to receive 1000 lashes.
