Forté Mentorship Program

What's your forté? The Forté Mentorship Program is an opportunity to take the next steps in your creative career, designed to enhance the skills and experience of First Nations artists, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse artists, and artists who are D/deaf or Disabled working in any artform at any career stage.

The City of Maribyrnong’s Arts and Culture Strategy 2018-2023 acknowledges that the arts enable individuals and communities to engage on multiple levels, with differing skill sets and experiences, and seeks to actively remove physical, social and other barriers to arts practice and participation. Mentoring provides an opportunity to enhance the capacity of artists by creating an informed and flexible environment to share knowledge.  It provides benefits for participants through the capacity and confidence to pursue their goals with dedicated support; provide new perspectives to mentors; and enhance networking relationships and connections for all participants.

By providing a mentoring opportunity Council seeks to develop individual artists’ creative practice, career pathways and build a community of practice between all mentors and mentees while actively supporting stronger access and inclusion for artists of diverse backgrounds in Maribyrnong.

About the Program

In 2021 the Forté Mentorship Program will offer five (5) independent artists from the West the unique opportunity to work one-on-one with a Mentor to build their knowledge, skills and professional networks. The program is open to emerging, mid-career and established artists in all disciplines, with a self-defined creative and/or professional goal that will be aided by the mentor relationship.

Participation in Forté is specifically catered to support the careers of artists who identify as:

  • First Nations,
  • Culturally and Linguistically Diverse, and/or
  • D/deaf or Disabled

This program is about connecting, exploring and extending your skillset as fuel for the future of your practice – both creatively and professionally.  The aim is to provide local artists with space for growth, and the seeds for new ideas and ways of working – so although you may propose a specific project to work on, you do not need to have an outcome pre-planned in order to apply.
