The countdown is on!

The eyes of the Commonwealth will be on Footscray on Saturday 10 February 2018 as the Queen's Baton Relay journeys towards its final destination, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018. GC2018 will be staged from 4-15 April 2018, with more than 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 Commonwealth nations and territories sharing in the excitement of the Games. Be part of this special day!

The Queen's Baton Relay Route

The Queen’s Baton Relay will make its way around Footscray on Saturday 10 February between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. It will enter the Little Saigon Precinct and Byron Plaza to a crowd of people cheering on its arrival to the stage. Residents are encouraged to line the streets and cheer on our local legends!

Traffic management will be in place to ensure safe passage of the Baton and help residents and businesses plan for minimal disruption.

Community Celebration

Be part of this historic celebration that will delight the young and young at heart! Join in the fun from 4.30-6.30pm at the Little Saigon Precinct for a special Community Celebration! School children from local schools St Margaret's Primary School and Caroline Chisholm Catholic College will warm up the crowd with entertainment to welcome the Queen's Baton to our city. Melbourne alternative rock trio, Kingswood will then amp up the party with hits that are sure to please. See the Baton on display and hear from local Batonbearers. Keep the vibe alive in Footscray with a winning meal served with a cheerful smile in one of our many delicious restaurants.

Local Batonbearers

The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation has announced the names of Batonbearers, who will carry the Queen’s Baton across Australia during the lead up to the Games. Selected through a community nomination program, the Batonbearers recognise the achievements and aspirations of Australians from all walks of life. Braybrook Secondary College student Linh Khong will be among the prestigious list of Batonbeares. You can view the full list of our representatives at the link below.

Getting there

Due to road closures along the baton route, it’s best to walk, ride or catch the train and jump off at West Footscray station (2 min walk from Whitten Oval); Middle Footscray station (5 min walk from Barkly st); or Footscray station (5 min walk from the Community Celebration site).
