For over a decade the Festival City program has delivered a broad range of dynamic festivals and activities across the City annually.

Local community festivals are supported through the Festival City Grants Program and Council also partners with a range of flagship Melbourne festivals such as the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Midsumma Festival and Melbourne Fringe. In addition to the vibrant calendar of festivals, a range of public events are held across the city, capped off by the spectacular New Year’s Eve Fireworks in Footscray Park.

Despite the significant impacts of COVID-19 to the 2020/21 program, some of the City's planned festivals were able to proceed either online, or in an adjusted COVIDSafe capacity. Some highlights included:

  • A highly successful and COVIDSafe Yarraville Festival delivered in a new location - one of the first, larger-scale events to return in Melbourne since the Pandemic
  • The introduction of Westside Crawls - a series of sold-out progressive food experiences as part of Eat Drink West and the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival
  • A new, immersive and acclaimed arts event for Footscray 'Stargazed Festival'
  • Setting Sun Film Festival successfully pivoting to a digital program at short notice, attracting over 5000 viewers across the globe

Some highlights of the 2019/20 Festival City program included:

  • Council's New Year's Eve Fireworks in Footscray Park attracting it's largest crowd to date (approximately 22,000 people), delivered as a single-use plastic free event
  • The second edition of the biennial Due West Arts Festival which showcased the work of 575 local artists across 64 event
  • St Jerome’s Laneway Festival attracting over 17,000 music lovers to the iconic Footscray Park, building upon the city’s reputation as the home for live music.
  • A highly successful Midsumma Westside Program, supported by partnerships with the national Better Together Conference, Drummond Street Services and our surrounding local Councils
