What is the Young People’s Platform 2019-2022?

In the lead up to 2019 Federal Election, the Maribyrnong Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) led a youth consultation amongst local young people between the ages of 14 and 18, to capture their priorities for the new Commonwealth Government in Canberra. MYAC members, as youth consultants, went out to schools and public spaces and surveyed 110 young people in the community.  Although these young people were not yet old enough to vote at the election, they do have opinions, concerns and ideas that need to be acknowledged, communicated and for the government to take into account.

Why is there a need for a Platform?

Young people’s voices are often not heard in the political process because they cannot yet vote. By creating Young People’s Platform, MYAC wanted to let young people know that there are other avenues how young people’s opinions, ideas and concerns can be raised and brought to the attention of decision-makers.

What is in the Platform?

The Young People’s Platform 2019-2022 presents the topics and policy issues that young people in our municipality expect its elected representatives in the Australian House of Representatives to consider. It also makes suggestions about the most crucial steps that should be taken to improve specific priority issues.

Who is the Platform for?

The platform was sent to the three federal Members of Parliament whose electorates cover the City of Maribyrnong. MYAC liaises with the MPs to advocate for the issues raised in the platform. The platform also serves as a guiding document for MYAC in its future advocacy work and we encourage anyone to use the platform as a reference point.
