About the gallery

Phoenix Youth Centre’s gallery is situated in the heart of the inner west, Footscray. The 11 metre x 3 metre  gallery wall also has ceiling hanging opportunities and some floor space for free standing art. The space is suitable for paintings, photography, and illustrations, small 3D work (such as sculpture) and multimedia.

Who can exhibit?

The Phoenix Gallery is free to hire to young people 12 to 25 years of age to stage solo or group exhibitions. By holding your own exhibition, you have the opportunity to build your exhibition CV and attract an audience. You can also use the opportunity to sell your work and get all of the sales as Maribyrnong Youth Services takes no commission.

It is also available to organisations collaborating with young people.

Support to exhibit for young artists

Exhibitors can be supported by Maribyrnong Youth Services in installing their exhibition and with producing promotional materials. Exhibiting artists can also apply for an Artist in Residency. The Artist in Residency Program is for artists 12  to 25 and provides the artist or group of artists with the opportunity to use the Phoenix Art Studio to produce art for an exhibition in the Phoenix Gallery. In addition, we provide material support up to $250  for costs such as art materials, invitation postcards and so on. Assistance will be given in planning, marketing and advertising. We offer two Artist in Residencies a year. Come and talk to the Arts Officer for further information.

Other opportunities for young artists

As an artist you can also enquire about leading arts workshops in the Phoenix Art Studio or other locations in Maribyrnong.

You can also participate in visual arts program and, if you are 18 – 25 years of age, use the art studio to produce your own work.
