Join our summer challenge for young readers aged 0-18!

The BIG Summer Read is a state-wide challenge to help keep children and young people reading over the school break. Get involved to make books a big part of the summer holidays and for the chance to win some great prizes! 

Being part of the BIG Summer Read is easy.

  1. Register: Children aged 0-18 can register at any of our five libraries. Look out for the BIG Summer Read prize displays! 
  2. Log: Track your reading between 1 December 2025 - 31 January 2026 complete a reading log for every 5 books or 5 days reading. 
  3. Return: Drop your completed reading log at any library branch by handing it to a staff member - tell us what you loved reading!   
  4. Repeat: Grab more reading materials and collect another log for more chances to win. Each completed log = one prize draw entry,

Winners will be notified after the challenge wraps up on 31 January 2026. 

Free family events

Sign-up days (Tuesday 2 - Thursday 4 December)

Our Footscray, Maribyrnong, West Footscray and Yarraville branches will host a sign-up day in the first week of December, with book-themed displays, crafts, and activities to build excitement and encourage registrations.

BIG Summer Read bonanza (Saturday 6 December) 

Braybrook Library will kick off our magical summer of reading with a show from Felix the Magician with friendly librarians available to help you sign up and find the perfect reading material to get started.

Summer celebration (Saturday 31 January)

We’ll close out the summer with a celebration at Footscray Library, highlighting everyone’s reading across the holidays with a special celebration of our reading achievements.
