The Open House Melbourne Weekend celebrates good design by opening up buildings, places and spaces, inspiring public engagement in conversations about the future of our city.

The Weekend 2026 theme, Generous City, explores how design, creativity and architecture can foster a culture of openness, offering space, care and possibility to the people who live, work and play here.

This year the City of Maribyrnong is hosting nine fascinating places to explore:

  • Footscray Community Arts - Explore FCA’s evolving precinct through an open house, exhibition and self-guided tour (no bookings required)
  • Footscray Heritage Theatres Tour - A guided walking tour walking tour exploring the rich history of Footscray’s heritage theatres (bookings required)
  • Footscray Hospital - Western Health - A self-guided audio tour through Melbourne's new 'People's Hospital' (no bookings required)
  • Footscray Market - A tour exploring one of Melbourne's most vibrant multi-cultural markets (bookings required)
  • Maribyrnong Civic Precinct and Community Hub - A guided tour with DesignInc architect Jesse Newstadt who will discuss the process and challenges of transforming this historic town hall into a 6 Star Green Star-rated contemporary precinct (bookings required)
  • Secret Mall Apartment - a special one-off screening of the documentary film Secret Mall Apartment (bookings required)
  • Stack and Field: Generosity on a Tight Urban Site - Join architect Steffen Welsch for a presentation on sustainable home design, followed by a guided tour explaining how Welsch Studios made a compact space feel generous and comfortable (bookings required)
  • Sun Theatre - Join a tour of the cinema to go behind the scenes and watch a history newsreel screening in one of the theatres (bookings required)
  • Transurban Freeway Control Centre - Hear the stories behind the West Gate Tunnel's striking urban design and experience the new state-of-the-art Control Centre (bookings required)

Tours require bookings with first release tickets sales from Wednesday 1 July at 12pm, and second release from Saturday 5 July at 10am.
