Poetry slam workshop

Australia needs all of its stories to inspire the world, not just those told by people in power. A poetry slam is a place for all voices. Listen and get heard!

Before you enter your local Australian Poetry Slam Heat polish up your poetry, write your words, modify your meter and shine up your stanzas at an APS Poetry Workshop.

Jo Yang will guide you in writing words that electrify the imagination. Express your creative ideas or reshape existing work into competition-ready pieces. Learn about poetry slams and how to use your voice and body to bring the house down on stage. Whether this is your first time experimenting with thoughts to the page or you have been writing for years this workshop is for you.

Jo Yang is a Naarm based poet, high school teacher and host of an education podcast, rethinking the current education system. She was the 2022 Australian Poetry slam champion, and placed as a finalist in the World poetry slam championship. Her poetry is influenced heavily by her proud Chinese identity, and role as an educator. With often difficult topics to digest, she sees poetry as an honest means to share stories through empathy and connection. A collection of Yang’s poetry, Mixtures, was published by Word Travels Press in 2023.
