Three sisters have built the perfect fraud. They stage séances offering comfort to those who seek contact with their dead. Their mechanism is flawless. Until the night two trapeze artist twins, invited as guests, fall into a real and uncontrollable trance.

What emerges from them is not a spiritual message. It is something far more terrifying: migrant grief, the lost homeland, and the voices of our disappeared — channelled through the Heights of Machu Picchu from Pablo Neruda's Canto General, as interpreted by Los Jaivas.

As the twins speak what they cannot contain, the other guests begin to recognise their own buried losses. Exiled loves, disappeared relatives, countries left behind. The sisters' fraud collapses. What was a spectacle becomes confession.

La Trampa is a play about the lies we build to sustain existence — and what happens when truth refuses to be contained. It speaks of exile, migrant grief, the memory of the homeland, and the human instinct to sustain a fiction rather than face an unbearable past. These are not exclusively Hispanic American themes. They belong to anyone who has left a place they cannot return to, and carried that silence forward.

Presented in Spanish and English (subtitles will be provided). Written and directed by Manuel Saez. Produced by Smoko Theatre, Melbourne's independent migrant-led theatre company.
