MYAC in Action

The Maribyrnong Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) has been actively involved in shaping programs and initiatives that support young people in the municipality.

Below is a selection of MYAC’s recent work, highlighting how members contribute to local decision making and help create positive experiences for young people.

Western Region Youth Forum 2025

On Wednesday 16 July, the Maribyrnong Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) participated in the Western Regions Youth Forum, an important event that brings together young leaders from six Local Government Areas: Maribyrnong, Melton, Hobsons Bay, Moonee Valley, Brimbank, and Wyndham.

In preparation for the forum, MYAC engaged in four workshops to explore and refine their chosen topic: Youth Crime.

Workshop 1 – Initial meeting of all young people. Set expectations, hear from previous participants and set up what the forum is and what they will be delivering. Facilitated by 2 young leaders from Hobsons Bay.

Workshop 2 – Focus on leadership and presentation skills/public speaking. Refinement of topics. Facilitated by the Youth Engagement Project (YEP)

Workshop 3 – Focus on finalising presentations and preparing young people for the Youth Forum. Facilitated by the Youth Engagement Project (YEP)

Youth Forum Day – The Forum took place at The Substation in Hobsons Bay. Facilitated by the Youth Engagement Project (YEP) with special guests Albee Damnics (2025 Hobsons Bay Young Citizen of the Year) and Hon. Melissa Horne MP (Member for Williamstown)

After carefully selecting their topic, MYAC examined the impact Youth Crime has on young people and the broader Maribyrnong community. Members collected their own data through an online survey that was circulated to family, friends and other members of the community. They worked together to create their presentation, ensuring they capsulated the severity of this issue.

During the Forum, MYAC presented their findings and engaged in meaningful discussions with Mayor Pradeep Tiwari, CEO Celia Haddock, and Cr Mohamed Semra. Together, they began shaping a one-year action plan to address the issue.
See below the proposed program “Rise Up: Youth Empowerment Proposal”.

In total, 62 young leaders participated in the Forum, using their platforms to amplify youth voices and advocate for change within their communities.

Huge shout out to Hobsons Bay City Council for hosting this year’s Forum!

39th Victorian Youth Parliament 2025

"Change doesn't ask for permission. And neither did we. Victorian Youth Parliament gave us the floor, and we made history".
Tiernan Ali (2025 participant)

Members Tiernan, Taihan, Patrick, Vivianne Ava and Rafael from the Maribyrnong Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) proudly represented the voices of local young people through their participation in the YMCA Youth Parliament program. An initiative that empowers young leaders to influence real-world policy change.

Their journey began in February 2025 where members attended multiple online workshops with their delegated Taskforce member from The Y to develop and finalise their proposed Bill.

Members landed on the following Bill titled 'Increased Accessibility of Non-Car Centric Transport' which calls for a shift towards more sustainable, inclusive, and people-friendly urban design. The Bill advocates for standardised and enforceable planning guidelines to support active and public transport, reduce reliance on cars, and improve accessibility across Victoria’s cities.

Patrick, Vivianne, Ava, Taihan, Tiernan and Rafael presented their Bill during the Youth Parliament residential camp, held from Sunday 6 July to Friday 11 July, in the chambers of the Victorian Parliament.

In the weeks following, members presented their Bill to Councillors, Executive Leadership, and Local Members of Parliament, continuing to champion youth-led ideas for a more connected and sustainable future.

Help the team share and advocate for their Bill through sharing with friends, family and members of the Maribyrnong municipality.

Western Regions Youth Forum 2024

On Friday 12 April, the Maribyrnong Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) participated in the Western Regions Youth Forum. The Forum offers the opportunity for young leaders in the community from six Local Government Areas (Maribyrnong, Melton, Hobsons Bay, Moonee Valley, Brimbank and Wyndham) to present on an issue they have identified important within their local community.

MYAC’s chosen issue was Climate Change, they discussed the severe impacts it has on the environment, their homes and their health. Identifying areas of improvements that start in our education system and transportation. After the presentations, attendees participated in a round table discussion to find solutions to each issue with Local and State Leaders facilitating conversation. Overall, 46 young leaders came together and advocated for youth voice, representing their communities.

The next steps for MYAC are to work with Council Leaders to deliver on their outcomes.

Maribyrnong Wellbeing and Self-care Youth Forum 2023

On Friday 21 July, the Maribyrnong Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) delivered the Wellbeing and Self-care Youth Forum. This event was designed and delivered by MYAC in partnership with Maribyrnong Youth Services, as part of Victoria’s Government ENGAGE! Program.

The forum aimed to engage young people across Maribyrnong to access information and voice their experiences and opinions. Approximately 35 secondary school students were in attendance from Years 9, and five teachers from the participating schools:  Maribyrnong College, Footscray High and Western English Language School.

MYAC’s decision to facilitate a Youth Forum focused on Mental Health Wellbeing was informed by previous work done by MYAC, including last year’s Youth Forum. One of our MYAC members – Sunny Nguyen, lead a research project as part of his work with the University of Melbourne on the challenges young people faced during the COVID19  pandemic, and any lasting effects the pandemic had on their mental health wellbeing. Over 50 young people in the municipality were interviewed. This was a youth participatory project and in involved large discussions and advisory groups. Mental health, wellbeing and the need for support in self- care management was identified as the key theme as needing to be addressed.

MYAC transformed 4 rooms at the Phoenix Youth Centre into wellbeing and self-care spaces. Each room catered for an interactive activity, and to showcase different ways of practising self-care.

Chill out Space – this space was set in the Bunker which is a soundproof room. Students participated in a 10-minute guided meditation and enjoyed the sounds of the sea.

Affirmation Station – was held in the multi-purpose space where students were asked to take a polaroid picture of themselves or a prop/object and write an affirmation that was best suited to them.

Animal Therapy – was held outside where students could interact with bunny Mocha and dog Murphey.

Therapeutic Art Space – was held in the training room where students all contributed to a large canvas and were asked to illustrate their interpretation of wellbeing.

The second half of the day involved multiple consultations delivered by MYAC member Sunny Nguyen and Dr. Katitza Chavez from the University of Melbourne. The consultation was based around the Commission for Children and Young People’s Empowerment and Participation Guide, where students were asked to share their thoughts on co-creating safe spaces in the municipality. Guest speaker and well-being coach Antonie NG closed the event on a huge high.

These findings are the source to shaping MYAC’s future work and ensuring young people participate in a safe space.

Maribyrnong Climate Change Youth Forum 2022

On Wednesday 4 May 2022, the Maribyrnong Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC) and Maribyrnong City Council Youth Services, hosted Maribyrnong’s Climate Change Youth Forum at Phoenix Youth Centre. The Maribyrnong Climate Change Youth Forum was designed and delivered by MYAC, in partnership with Council’s Youth Services and as part of Victoria’s Government ENGAGE! Program.

The forum aimed to engage young people across Maribyrnong to access information and voice their experiences and opinions. Approximately 50 secondary school students were in attendance from Years 9 and 10, and seven teachers from the participating schools:  Maribyrnong College, Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, Footscray High and Western English Language School.

Young people engaged in a range of interactive climate focused activities and listened to keynote speeches from topic experts and climate activists:

• Katta O’Donnel - A law student who sued the Government for the financial implications of climate change.
• Lili Mayer - From the youth-led not for profit activist organisation Schools Strike 4 Climate Change.
