Whether you’re training for a 5K or targeting the Melbourne Marathon, Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre (MAC) is here to support your journey every step of the way.

We’ve pulled together some of our top classes and ways to help you get results and improve your running performance.

Deep Water Running

While getting in the pool might not seem like the most obvious way to improve your running, this group exercise class is an excellent form of non-weight-bearing cardio.

The water offers support while adding resistance, making it ideal for runners or anyone recovering from injury. Held in the deep end of the main pool, this class is a unique and fun way to boost your cardiovascular fitness without the impact on your joints—perfect for cross-training or active recovery.

Pilates

Our mat Pilates classes are popular for a reason — they deliver results!
Pilates helps build core strength and stability, which promotes better posture and alignment, both crucial for efficient and injury-free running.

These sessions target muscular imbalances and weaknesses, helping prevent common running injuries such as:

  • IT band syndrome
  • Shin splints
  • Runner’s knee
  • Lower back pain

Because running is a repetitive, one-plane activity, it often leads to overuse of certain muscles (e.g., overactive quads, underactive glutes). Pilates focuses on balanced muscle activation, especially in the glutes, hips, and stabilisers, which can improve your overall movement mechanics.

Yoga

MAC’s yoga classes help increase flexibility, strength, and joint stability. Tight hips, hamstrings, and calves are common in runners. Regular yoga sessions—combining dynamic and static stretching—can improve muscle length and joint mobility, reducing the risk of injury and enhancing stride efficiency.

Tailored Gym Programs

One of the biggest benefits of being a MAC member is access to personalised gym programs.

All gym users receive a custom training plan developed through a health assessment. Our experienced trainers will work with you to tailor a program that aligns with your goals and supports your running performance.

Your work in the gym goes a long way toward making you a stronger, more efficient runner. And with our range of treadmills, you can keep up your interval or speed sessions indoors when the weather isn't ideal.
