The importance of adult swimming

Jimmy learnt to swim with MAC

Unfortunately there have been numerous recent examples of adults drowning in Australia as they weren’t confident swimmers and didn’t know what to do when they got in trouble.

Drowning is a sudden, abrupt, and shocking event, with people often not realizing it's happening until it's too late and in Australia hundreds of families lose loved ones to drowning every year. More than 80% of people that drown are aged over 18 years old.

But this doesn’t have to be the case.

At Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre we know that it’s never too late to learn how to swim and that swimming is a skill that will literally save your life or someone else's.

MAC offers a range of classes for adults to help you get in the water in a safe, confident and supported way so that you can become a stronger swimmer and enjoy a safe summer around water.

We recognise that becoming a better swimmer is a different journey for everyone and our award winning MACqua Education program teaches all students to swim in a positive, friendly learning environment with fully qualified and registered Swim Teachers.

One of MAC’s regulars, Jimmy Phan wasn’t a confident swimmer before he started taking adult swimming lessons at MAC two years ago.

“I wanted to be able to swim in open bodies of water confidently, as prior to starting lessons I I wasn’t able to tread water and had a terrible fear of drowning.”

“There was a lot of barriers to me getting in the pool that first time, but through regular lessons, commitment, setting achievable goals and having fun I was able to overcome these and become confident in and around water.”

Now a regular swimmer at our MACqua Laps program, Jimmy’s advice for new swimmers is “commitment and having fun. It’s also important to not be afraid of getting water up your nose, you’ll get use to it, but it takes time to be comfortable in water.”

Jimmy now has his sights set on being able to swim 50m in 35 seconds & swim 50m Butterfly in 45 seconds by the end of the year.

If you are a beginner and new to swimming you will learn:
