The Bunker
Hidden within the Phoenix Youth Hub is one of Maribyrnong’s most unique creative spaces: The Bunker.
Originally built in the 1940s as an Air Raid Precaution Centre, this concrete‑encased room has been transformed into a fully equipped, acoustically treated content lab designed for creative young people.
Whether you're rehearsing with your band, recording your next track, producing a podcast, filming content, or experimenting with new ideas, The Bunker gives you the freedom to create without limits.
Its soundproofed walls, dedicated entrance, and access to quality music and recording equipment make it the perfect space to focus, collaborate, and bring your projects to life.
As part of the Phoenix Youth Hub operated by Maribyrnong Youth, The Bunker is available exclusively to young people aged 12 to 25 who live, work, study, or spend time in the City of Maribyrnong. The Hub embraces a shared‑space philosophy - everyone is welcome, and everyone is respected.

Hiring options
Young people, youth groups and community organisations with a youth focus can hire the Bunker in one of two ways:
Casual hire
- Single bookings of the Bunker (accessible 7 days a week until 10pm) *subject to availability
- Use of all equipment for rehearsals, recording, or podcasting
- Programmable swipe card to access the space
- An online account to create and manage your own bookings
The Bunker memberships
- Bunker memberships allow individuals or groups to have up to two bookings per week, maximum four hours each (accessible 7 days a week until 10pm) *subject to availability
- Use of all equipment for rehearsals, recording, or podcasting
- Programmable swipe card to access the space
- An online account to create and manage your own bookings
To be eligible, all members must be aged between 12 to 25 years and must have a connection to the City of Maribyrnong.
The Bunker is compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). Please contact us to discuss any specific access requirements.
Fees
Special offer for 2026
All new hirers aged 12–25 can access free Bunker hire throughout 2026 (until 31 December 2026) making it the perfect time to launch or level up your creative project!
Max. 2 bookings per week of 4 hours each.
Swipe card bond (refundable) of $20
In January 2027 fees will revert to the following options:
Casual hire (2027)
Casual bookings cost $10 for a maximum of four hours. A refundable swipe card bond of $20 and a room bond of $200 apply.
Payments must be made before booking through the Bookable portal.
Bunker membership (2027)
Membership costs $125 for six months. A refundable swipe card bond of $20 and a room bond of $200 apply.
Payments must be made before the six-month period through the Bookable portal.
Room description and features
The Bunker is 7.9 x 8.5 metres with its own external entrance on Buckley Street, Footscray.
It has carpeted floor and is acoustically treated to provide a soundproofed space for rehearsal, recording, filming or content creation. The Bunker has a kitchenette space and gender-free toilet facilities, with a wudu room. The space is DDA compliant and suitable for any people with a disability.
