Council is building a new Splash Park at Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre (MAC).

The project includes:

a 400 square metre splash park
two water slides
change rooms
site sheds and fencing along the eastern side of the Centre

Construction will soon resume on the more than $16 million redevelopment, following the appointment of Circon Constructions Pty Ltd in October 2025.

The Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre Water Slides and Splash Park project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and Council.

Project details

Project background

The project experienced an unforeseen setback in September 2023 with the liquidation of the head contractor. This caused works to stop temporarily.

Following this disruption, a comprehensive review and redesign of the structural elements were undertaken, accompanied by thorough structural and civil site surveys to ensure accurate and up-to-date condition assessments, vital for the project's progression.

During this period, Council secured a Community Energy Upgrade Fund grant. This led to an altered design to replace all gas components with electric alternatives, aligning with Council's net-zero emissions strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still visit MAC during construction?

Yes, MAC is open as usual during works and any changes to usual hours will be notified in advance.

Will there be construction noise?

Yes. There will be some construction noise.

Will I be able to hear noise inside MAC's pool?

Yes. At times normal construction noise will be heard in the venue.

When will it be noisiest?

It will be noisiest between the start of March and mid-April 2026. During this period there will be jackhammering and concrete footings will be piled down to the required level.

What are the construction and traffic impacts?

Contractors will be working onsite weekdays 7am-6pm and Saturdays as needed 7am-1pm and frequently during this time there will be some construction noise and dust.

There will be reduced parking in the northern (Highpoint side) of the MAC carpark to accommodate construction and there will be increased truck movements along Rosamond Road and Aquatic Drive as heavy vehicles bring equipment on site.

How is this project funded?

This project is jointly funded by Maribyrnong City Council along with the Victoria State Government.

Additionally, a grant from the Federal Government was announced in 2025 to support the electrification of the Centre.

The $2.5 million grant from the Federal Government will support the replacement of MAC's existing gas infrastructure with a centralised heat pump system, reducing 1,220 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
