  • Project value$2.5 Million

Barkly Village in West Footscray is a Neighbourhood Activity Centre in the West Footscray Neighbourhood Plan (2022).  Barkly Street connects central Footscray and the Melbourne CBD and supports diverse community, business and residential services.

We will be improving Barkly Street with things like new bus stops, accessible parking bays, a pedestrian operated signal crossing, more trees and seating, upgraded bike lanes, and wider footpaths. This will encourage slower traffic movement and provide additional space for pedestrians and foliage.

Dedicated cycle lanes will be added between Warleigh Street and Summerhill Road and we are installing a permanent park on Clark Street.

Project details

Construction will involve temporary road closures, lane reductions and changed traffic conditions to enable works to be completed safely.  Property access will be maintained, although residents, businesses and visitors may experience short-term detours or delays.  Temporary changes to traffic management, access or parking will be communicated in advance.

Engagement

We engaged on these designs in 2022 and 2023. Community feedback helped us improve the design.

The final concept reflects community feedback and focuses on three key outcomes:

  • Safer walking and cycling through traffic calming, improved pedestrian crossings, upgraded cycling facilities and in-lane bus stops.
  • More trees and landscaping with additional street trees and planting to create a cooler, greener and more attractive village centre.
  • Lower traffic speeds through measures including in-lane bus stops, kerb extensions, and investigations of a 30km/h speed limit.
