Help us make Barkly Street better

Council is sharing plans to improve safety for all road users along Barkly Street between Summerhill Road and Geelong Road in Footscray with the community for feedback.
The Barkly Village Streetscape Improvement Plan from 2023 showed that the community wants Barkly Street to be a friendly neighbourhood centre for walkers and bike riders with trees and slow-moving traffic that supports vibrancy in and around Barkly village.
Council has created a draft concept design for community feedback, which includes a full resheet of the road pavement, and space for more street trees on the roadside and in the median to help keep our City cool.
It includes separated bike lanes between Summerhill Road and Geelong Road, and safer pedestrian crossings with more space between cars and people.
We are also working with State Government to upgrade four existing bus stops between Summerhill Road and Gordon Street as a part of this road improvement project.
The draft design aims to make people feel safer whether they’re walking, riding, catching public transport or driving.
To make these changes there would be 34 less on-street car parks between Summerhill Road and Geelong Road. The majority of on-street car parking spaces that would be removed are on the north side of the street between Gordon St and Geelong Road.
Most car parks on the north side of the street near people’s homes are being kept, with on-street parks being reduced near fast food restaurants and car yards.
“We want to hear from people who live on Barkly Street, who visit the village, or travel through it to make sure that this design has something for everyone,” said Mayor, Cr Mohamed Semra.
“We know how important it is for people to feel safe traveling around our City, and this project hopes to create a smoother walk, ride and drive for everyone,” he added.
This project will be open for feedback on Your City Your Voice from late-July and we will be holding in person feedback sessions in early August to hear directly from residents, businesses and commuters as we finalise the approach.
Feedback closes midnight Sunday 30 August 2026.
Feedback will help inform the next stage of design and any future decisions about the project.
