Closure of Council facilities

Maribyrnong City Council will temporarily close its community centres, recreation centres, public libraries and Customer Service Centre from their normal close of business today until Tuesday 14 April.

“This was not an easy decision to make’” said Mayor, Councillor Sarah Carter. “The health and wellbeing of our community and our employees is our priority and we need to work together to do everything we can to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the community.”

“We have considered the advice given by the Federal and State Governments and feel that this is the best way forward.”

“The Federal Government has directed that there are to be no gatherings of 500 people or more, and all community events that meet this criteria will be cancelled. We also ask organisers at smaller events to seriously consider whether they should proceed in the interest of the community’s wellbeing.”

“Most Council services will continue to operate as normal, including waste, recycling, parking services and park management. However, we ask community members to contact us by phone or email.”

“We are exploring ways that we can further minimise the risk for our community. Council meetings will not be open to the public, but will be available as usual through livestreaming. Community members wishing to have a question answered at the meeting are requested to email it to Council by 6.00pm on the evening of the meeting.”

“There is no precedent for this, but I want community members to be assured that we are doing everything to ensure their safety.”

The following centres will close from close of business today until Tuesday 14 April.

  • Maribyrnong Community Centre
  • Maidstone Community Centre
  • Braybrook Community Hub
  • Footscray Library
  • Braybrook Library
  • West Footscray Library
  • Yarraville Library
  • Maribyrnong Library
  • Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre
  • RecWest Footscray and Braybrook
  • Bluestone Church Arts Space
  • Phoenix Youth Centre

Council will review the situation as further information comes to hand.

Update - 20 March 2020

At this stage, Council meetings will go ahead as planned and will be open to the public. With the current public health situation in mind, social distancing measures will be in place. You are also encouraged to view the meeting via livestream - all livestreams will be available on our YouTube channel.

Community members are able to submit their questions for public question time via email before 6pm on the day of the meeting, and it will be read and answered at the meeting.
