Ideas for former Lae Street Nursery site
Published on 25 November 2021
Council is seeking community ideas and input into the future use of the former Lae Street Nursery site in West Footscray.
The site sits adjacent to MacDonald A Reserve and in-between Lae and Waratah streets and was used as the Council’s plant nursery for around forty years before it was closed in 2015. It is currently used to store plants and equipment.
Council has previously considered using a portion of the nursery site to more than double the size of the existing reserve incorporating a path to link it to Stony Creek and Waratah Street.
Following calls from members of the community for the site to be opened for public use, Council is inviting neighbours and residents in West Footscray to share their thoughts via an online survey.
Council is also establishing an Advisory Group to help support the conversation and advise on the wider community thinking. The Group will be made up of 12 people with an interest or immediate connection with the former Lae Street Nursery Site, to:
- Assist with exploring options for potential future uses for the site.
- Support broader engagement with the community on these options to ensure wide and inclusive engagement.
- Work with Council officers to review community feedback to identify the wider community preference.
- Assist in identifying potential governance options for any preferred option.
Eligibility criteria will apply and membership is voluntary.

A word from the Mayor, Cr Anthony Tran
“This is an exciting opportunity for the local West Footscray community, who we hope, in time, can enjoy this former nursery space and make it theirs.”
“I would encourage anyone with a keen interest in the Lae Street site or surrounding area to get involved – either by filling out the survey or applying to join the Advisory Group to ensure their voices, and those of the wider West Footscray community are heard.”
