Council is taking action to reduce emissions and prepare for future climate risks – and we want the community’s input.
Council has completed a range of actions to tackle climate change, including continuing to transition our operations to use renewable energy, electrification of our buildings cutting emissions, reducing waste, planting and greening, preparing for floods, and supporting community programs such as My Smart Garden Program, Youth Sustainability Summit, Garage Sail Trail and more,
Previous community conversations on our Budget and the Council Plan 2025-29 have shown our community sees climate change, the environment and sustainability as key issues.
Based on this, we have reviewed the Climate Emergency Strategy 2020-25 and the Climate Emergency Action Plan 2021-25. We have now prepared a draft Climate Response Strategy 2027-37 and an 18-month action plan, which will guide our actions moving forward.
“Our next Strategy will build on our work by focusing on clearer outcomes, measurable impact and stronger links between actions, emission reduction, resilience and community benefit. You’ve told us how important climate action is, so help us by giving your honest feedback on the draft Strategy,” Mayor Semra said.
The draft Strategy brings together existing climate commitments under a single framework and establishes clear targets for action.
Climate change is already impacting Maribyrnong through heat, flooding, extreme weather and environmental impacts, including air and water pollution, health impacts and impacts to service delivery and infrastructure.
Council is taking action to reduce emissions and prepare the future climate risks, and small actions taken by households and businesses can collectively make a big difference. Addressing climate change is a shared responsibility between all levels of government, businesses, community organisations and residents.
