Improvements
Council has a regular program of delivering capital works improvements and other projects designed to improve the public space and help activate the Footscray CBD.
Planned Improvements
The following projects are planned for delivery in the 2025/26 financial year.
Nicholson Street North
Description: Greening and pedestrian priority improvements on the corner of Nicholson Street and Geelong Road.
Project Value: $130,000
Leeds Street Public Open Space
Description: Design and delivery of a new open space and intersection upgrades at Leeds and Donald Streets.
Project Value: $120,000
Bryon Plaza Shade Structure
Description: Design and delivery of a new shade structure and additional greening at Byron Plaza
Project Value: $120,000
Maddern Square Upgrades
Description: Renewal of the open space with lighting and active recreation additions including a half court basketball court, and skateboard infrastructure.
Project Value: $150,000
Bunbury Street Renewal
Description: On-going delivery of the Bunbury Street works program.
Project Value: $1,000,000
Maribyrnong Street Public Toilet
Description: Design and delivery of a new public toilet to service the Maribyrnong Wharf park area on Maribyrnong Street.
Project Value: $450,000
Recently Completed Improvements
The following is a list of projects that have been recently delivered by Council.
Creative Places Pilot Project
Creative Places was a pilot program by Maribyrnong City Council delivered in 2024 that transformed underutilised commercial properties in the Footscray Central Business District into dynamic, vibrant and accessible creative spaces.
This program, supported by investment from the Victorian Government’s Creative Neighbourhoods Partnerships Pilot Program, aims to foster community involvement, stimulate economic revitalisation, and address the need for affordable venues for the local creative community.

Festoon Lighting Upgrade to Nicholson Street
Festoon lighting was installed in 2024 between the trees that run along the southern end of Nicholson Street (Little Africa) to create a colourful and festive appearance into the evenings. These works were funded by a State Government Grant.
Byron Plaza Upgrades
Byron Plaza was upgraded in 2023 with new lighting, seating and landscaping with stage and seating area with umbrellas.
Dalmahoy Street Upgrade
Dalmahoy Streetscape improvements were completed in 2023 and are part of making Footscray a greener and better place to walk and shop. Dalmahoy Street has been transformed into a 10km/h shared pedestrian and vehicle zone with eleven new trees.
