Council backs vision for Tottenham and West Footscray’s future
Published on 18 September 2026
Council will progress strategic planning work to help shape the future of Tottenham and West Footscray (south of the railway line), with a focus on employment, transport, improved amenity, and the interface between industrial and residential areas.
Council has resolved to prioritise work on the draft Tottenham and West Footscray Employment Precinct Framework Plans, following consideration of a Notice of Motion calling for investigation of a broader Precinct Vision and Investment Framework for the area around Tottenham Station and land south of the railway line in West Footscray.
The area is strategically important to Maribyrnong, supporting thousands of jobs and playing a significant role in freight, logistics, rail access and employment land supply, while also being home to established residential communities, parks, local activity centres and Stony Creek.
Recent development activity and changing land use, including the emergence of data centres along the industrial and residential interface, have highlighted the need for clear strategic guidance for the area.
Council will update the existing draft Framework Plans with the latest strategic work covering issues such as economic development, transport, open space, and urban design. Community consultation on the updated Plans will follow.
Mayor, Cr Mohamed Semra said the work would help Council advocate for the infrastructure and investment the area needs.
“Tottenham and West Footscray are vital employment and transport precincts, and we need a clear vision for how they evolve while protecting the amenity of local communities,” Mayor Semra said.
Council’s strategic planning work will also strengthen its advocacy to the State and Federal Governments for improved transport, freight, rail and station access infrastructure, many of which depend on government investment and approvals.
Council will provide the community with further updates on this strategic planning for the area.
