Council welcomes additional PSOs for Footscray following advocacy

Council has welcomed the State Government's announcement that additional Protective Services Officers (PSOs) will be recruited and then deployed in major shopping strips, including Footscray, to help improve community safety and provide a stronger visible presence in busy public places.

The announcement follows continued advocacy by Council for increased policing resources and a stronger on-the-ground presence to help people feel safe in their communities. Last week, mayors from across Melbourne's west joined together to call for more visible police, improved access to local police services and policing resources that keep pace with community growth.

Mayor Cr Mohamed Semra said the announcement was a positive step for Footscray and the broader community.

"This is a welcome outcome for our community and one that reflects the concerns Council, local traders, residents and businesses have been raising for some time. Everyone deserves to feel safe in Footscray and across Maribyrnong. A stronger visible presence in our activity centres will help improve community confidence and supports the people who live, work, run businesses and visit our city.”

"Last week I met with the Minister for Police to advocate directly for more resources in Melbourne's west. It was a constructive and successful discussion, and I am pleased to see action being taken. While there is more work to do, this announcement is an important step in the right direction."

Cr Semra said Council would continue to advocate for measures that improve community safety.

"Community safety is a shared responsibility. Council will continue working with Victoria Police, local traders, community organisations and all levels of government to help ensure our residents feel safe and supported."
