Financial Relief Extended for Flood Impacted Maribyrnong Residents
Published on 21 February 2023
An extension of the flood rebate for Maribyrnong residents impacted by the October 2022 Flood Event was endorsed at tonight’s Council Meeting.
A 50% rebate on the 2022/23 third and fourth quarter rates and municipal charges instalment will apply.
Mayor, Cr Sarah Carter, said the extension recognises the ongoing impacts of the flooding and support required by impacted residents as they begin to recover and rebuild.
“We understand recovery is a long and challenging process, and we are committed to doing all that we can to help those in need,” Mayor Carter said.
“This is another tangible response by Council to help alleviate the financial burden during the recovery period.”
Rebates do not apply to the State Government Fire Service Levy.
Flood affected ratepayers are also able to enter into a minimum payment arrangement for Municipal Rates and Charges to support individual circumstances, with no interest charged. The waste charge for the 2022/23 has already been waived.
Legal action for the collection of rates and charges on any impacted property has also been suspended.
Impacted residents can apply for the rebate by completing the online application form or by downloading a hard copy of the application form. More than 130 applications have been received to date.
In addition to extending the flood rebate, Council has also formed a Community Recovery Committee. It will predominately be made up of Maribyrnong residents who will provide guidance, support, and advice on what recovery should look like for their local community for a term of 18 months. Expressions of interest for nominations close at 5pm, Friday 24 February.
