Take the Challenge: Tackling single-use plastics this July
Published on 23 June 2025
Council is calling on the community to take part in Plastic Free July – a global movement helping millions reduce single-use plastics. Whether you are new to the challenge or a seasoned participant like our Deputy Mayor, Cr Bernadette Thomas (pictured here with her reusable coffee cup), now is the time to choose one item to swap for a reusable, sign up with your postcode, and help us measure our collective impact.
Mayor, Cr Pradeep Tiwari said Plastic Free July (PFJ) is a powerful reminder that everyday actions can lead to lasting change.
"Small changes by individuals can lead to big results when we work together. By signing up with your postcode, you are not just making a personal commitment – you are helping us track and celebrate Maribyrnong’s community-wide action against plastic waste."
Council is supporting this effort with a range of engaging activities throughout July. From 1 to 4 July, residents can drop by our local libraries to be inspired and learn more at PFJ Pop-up Roadshows. Please check our website for specific dates and times for each location.
Workshops also offer hands-on ways to get involved. Phoenix Youth Centre will host a beeswax wrap-making session for young people on 22 July, while similar sessions will be held at Yarraville Seniors Centre on 25 July. 'Flags to Bags' workshops will take place on July 23 and 29 – these workshops are part of a new community-led circular materials project that transforms retired city gateway flags into reusable bags.
The celebrations will wrap up on 1 August, with the Plastic Free July Community Celebration at the Civic Precinct and Community Hub in Footscray. Local participants in the Plastic Free July Challenge are invited to enjoy creative reuse workshops, browse stalls from local community groups, and enjoy plastic-free light refreshments.
Mayor Tiwari noted, “These actions reflect our ongoing commitment to reducing waste in line with Council’s Towards Zero Waste Strategy. Initiatives like Plastic Free July demonstrate how small, everyday choices can lead to real, measurable progress in cutting down single-use plastics.”
