Major upgrade underway: RecWest and Shorten Reserve progressing
Published on 18 March 2026
The new RecWest Facility is one step closer after securing a contractor for construction.
The old building was demolished last year, and other site works including soil surcharge compaction are underway ensuring that the future playing surface of shorten reserve meets modern standards.
“RecWest is a core part of the community in West Footscray, supporting generations of community members in Maribyrnong,” said Mayor, Cr Mohamed Semra.
“When completed, this upgraded facility will help address the shortage of indoor courts in the west and create spaces for future generations to enjoy.”
During the next stage of works the contractor, Ireland Brown Constructions, will complete the detailed design of the building and we will connect with the community for feedback on the relocation of the Shorten Reserve Playground.
Once these steps are complete, the contractor will begin building the new RecWest facility, upgrading and extending Shorten Pavilion, and reconstructing the Oval.
The new RecWest stadium will feature:
- an upgraded and larger health club
- a café
- two indoor courts
- community rooms
- Changing Places facility
- public toilets
- additional storage
This major transformation is a result of a joint investment of over $42 million from Council and the State Government an brings to life the vision developed by the community in the 2020 West Footscray Community Facilities Plan
