Community Playgroups offer a valuable opportunity for families to build social connections in their local community, while supporting children’s early development through shared play. 

Key features:

  • Parent led and community focused 
    In community playgroups families take the lead in organising the playgroups.  

  • Flexible meeting spaces 
    Groups may gather in local venues, cafés, parks, or family homes depending on the needs of participants. 

  • Building belonging
     Playgroup sessions can build informal support networks and positive relationships among children and caregivers through play, conversation, and engagement.

Starting a playgroup is a meaningful way to connect families, support children’s development, and foster local community participation.  
 
If you're a parent, carer, or resident interested in starting a playgroup, Maribyrnong City Council is here to assist. 

Our support can include: 

  • Guidance and practical steps to establish your group 

  • Support to find suitable venues for playgroup activities 

  • Assistance promoting your new group within the community 

While Council provides local support, it is recommended that community playgroups take up Playgroup Victoria Membership to ensure each playgroup family has insurance.
