Recovery update
Published on 28 June 2019
Last week, excavation of sediment continued to progress well towards Paramount Road, with contaminated sediment removed from a 500 metre length of the Creek.
This sediment is now being processed and treated in order to free up space in the bund (stockpile containment area) before further desilting work can continue. Before any material is removed offsite for disposal, ongoing sediment sampling and treatment of stockpiled material is undertaken.
Water and sediment sampling continues at four fixed locations; Quarry Road, Cala Street, Cruickshank Park and Hyde Street and Melbourne Water continues to regularly monitor conditions in the Creek.
Recent water and sediment monitoring results have been assessed and will be updated on the EPA website. The most recent sampling showed water and sediment concentrations below guideline values, but there were some spikes in concentrations in previous weeks.
The draft Stony Creek Rehabilitation Plan is expected to be released next week and will be open for feedback for four weeks via the Melbourne Water website. Community feedback will be incorporated into the final plan to ensure it aligns with expectations, values and aspirations.
EPA’s ongoing advice is:
- Avoid contact with the water in Stony Creek.
- Don’t walk along the edge of Stony Creek.
- Don't let pets swim in the area or drink the water.
- As a precaution avoid eating fish from Stony Creek.
- Seek medical help if you feel unwell.
